Introducing the class of 2012-13!

Posted on October 08, 2012 by Frances Rock

Here is a space for this year's MA students to introduce themselves.

It looks like it's going to be a very enjoyable year for us again, working with interesting students...

Session 1 - Wednesday 10th October 2012 (Midday - 1pm)

Posted on October 05, 2012 by Frances Rock

Our first reading for the group, chosen by Frances Rock is:

Christian Licoppe & Laurence Dumoulin (2010): The “Curious Case” of an Unspoken Opening Speech Act: A Video-Ethnography of the Use of Video Communication in Courtroom Activities, Research on Language & Social Interaction, 43:3, 211-231

The following prompt questions were given:

(1) Provide, for your own use, a short summary of the article - what are its main points and motivations?

(2) What did you respond to this this paper - anything about the research setting, the methods, the findings?

(3) What would you have done differently (in any way) if you had been undertaking this study or reporting it in a research article?

(4) What one question would you like to ask others in the group about this paper? (i.e. if you'd been preparing this task, what would you want people to think about within their preparation?)

Welcome to Cardiff Language and Law

Posted on October 05, 2012 by Christopher Heffer

Cardiff Language and Law (CaLL) is both a research group and a research network. As a research group, we are located in the Centre for Language and Communication Research in the School of English, Communication and Philosophy of Cardiff University. We have a strong tradition in language and law research and we run a well-established MA in Forensic Linguistics as well as supervising students on language and law topics. As a research network, we provide a focus for anyone working at the interface between language/communication and the law.

This weblog, then, does two things. First it gives information about the work we do as a research group at Cardiff. The weblog showcases our current research projects and publicises relevant talks, seminars, workshops and conferences held in the Centre for Language and Communication Research. Secondly, it encourages the development of a research network - a community of researchers and practitioners working in the general area of language and law.

We are interested in collaborating with researchers in other Schools within Cardiff and those at other institutions working in the field of language and law, broadly conceived. We aim more generally to facilitate, encourage and undertake collaborative research between legal practitioners.

Please get in touch if you are interested in participating in the CaLL network.
