Voyager records to change

Jan 26, 2011 by Lucy Collins

The University Library Service will be releasing ‘LibrarySearch’ in Summer 2011.  This new service will provide an improved interface for the Voyager library catalogue and other library managed information resources.
A Beta version will be released to the University during the spring semester, to gather feedback from staff and students, with a view to launching LibrarySearch in time for the start of the 2011-12 session.

In order to implement LibrarySearch, work is required on the Voyager library catalogue journal records to ensure they are presented correctly in LibrarySearch.  Currently the print and electronic versions of a journal are shown together on a single Voyager library catalogue record.  These joint records will need to be split into two separate records, one for the print version and another for the electronic version.  This means that you will see two separate search results for each journal which is available in both electronic and print format.  The electronic version will be indicated by the statement [Electronic Resource] after the title.  This is already the case for eBooks.  Once available, LibrarySearch will automatically join together the electronic and print versions of books and journals in the search results.

The work on splitting the journal records will start on 31 January and we anticipate that it will take a minimum of three days.  During this time some electronic journals may not be available via Voyager but will still be accessible as normal via the eLibrary (available via the Library menu in Cardiff Portal).  Direct links to journals from bibliographic databases and Google Scholar will also continue to work and all other aspects of Voyager will remain available.

If you have any queries or feedback about this work, please get in touch with your subject librarian.

Last day to name new Library

Dec 04, 2009 by Lucy Collins

Today is your last opportunity to suggest a name for the new library at the Heath site. See post below.

New Name for New Library

Nov 06, 2009 by Lucy Collins

As you are aware there is to be a new medical education centre on the Heath Park site which will house a new purpose-built library.  The new library will incorporate the current provision of the Sir Herbert Duthie Library, the Nursing and Healthcare Studies Library (both on the UHW site) and the School of Nursing and Midwifery Library currently situated in the Caerleon Education Centre, Newport.

We are sending this email to all Schools to be served by the new library inviting suggestions for a new library name.  The proposed name for the new medical education centre is the 'Cochrane building'.  Since we already have the 'Archie Cochrane Library' in Llandough we need to think of something different for this one.  Thoughts of a name for the library have so far focused upon either names which describe what can be found in the library (such as resources or subject areas) or names of prominent figures in healthcare.

We are looking for a name which is exciting and innovative but also fits the purpose of our library as a hub for the provision of Medical, Nursing and Healthcare information, both electronic and print, for the whole of Wales.  If you are up for the challenge we would love to hear from you and as a further temptation there is a prize up for grabs for the person who suggests the name used.

Please submit your suggestions with your name and contact details to Vikki Russell (PA to Janet Peters, University Librarian) at

RussellV@cardiff.ac.uk The closing date for suggestions is Friday 4th December.

Archie Cochrane - One Man's Medicine

May 07, 2009 by Lucy Collins

‘One Man’s Medicine: An Autobiography of Professor Archie Cochrane’ by Archibald L. Cochrane with Max Blythe.

Published as part of Cardiff University’s celebrations of the centenary of the birth of Professor Archie Cochrane, a giant of modern medicine.

In ‘One Man’s Medicine’, Professor Archie Cochrane (1909-1988) recollects how events and experiences in the Spanish Civil War and in German prisoner of war camps, among many others, led   him to question traditional medical attitudes and champion an evidence-based, evaluative approach to medicine and healthcare with which his name is now inextricably linked.

To find out more about Archie Cochrane and order a copy of the autobiography follow this link:
