Voyager records to change

Jan 26, 2011 by Lucy Collins

The University Library Service will be releasing ‘LibrarySearch’ in Summer 2011.  This new service will provide an improved interface for the Voyager library catalogue and other library managed information resources.
A Beta version will be released to the University during the spring semester, to gather feedback from staff and students, with a view to launching LibrarySearch in time for the start of the 2011-12 session.

In order to implement LibrarySearch, work is required on the Voyager library catalogue journal records to ensure they are presented correctly in LibrarySearch.  Currently the print and electronic versions of a journal are shown together on a single Voyager library catalogue record.  These joint records will need to be split into two separate records, one for the print version and another for the electronic version.  This means that you will see two separate search results for each journal which is available in both electronic and print format.  The electronic version will be indicated by the statement [Electronic Resource] after the title.  This is already the case for eBooks.  Once available, LibrarySearch will automatically join together the electronic and print versions of books and journals in the search results.

The work on splitting the journal records will start on 31 January and we anticipate that it will take a minimum of three days.  During this time some electronic journals may not be available via Voyager but will still be accessible as normal via the eLibrary (available via the Library menu in Cardiff Portal).  Direct links to journals from bibliographic databases and Google Scholar will also continue to work and all other aspects of Voyager will remain available.

If you have any queries or feedback about this work, please get in touch with your subject librarian.

Trevithick Library success in design awards

Jan 21, 2011 by Jackie Roach

The Trevithick Library fought off competitors from 17 other libraries around the UK to be named one of the two winners in the prestigious SCONUL (Society of College, National and University Libraries) Library Design Awards, winning the ‘smaller buildings’ category for developments under 3,000 square metres.
The Awards recognise the best new or refurbished Higher Education libraries in national and university institutions, and contribute to the continuing improvements in the standards of library design and functionality.

Details of the award and other news can be found in the

Trevithick 24 hour pc room has makeover...

Nov 12, 2010 by Jackie Roach

You're looking for somewhere to log on, it's past 9.30pm and most of the libraries are closed, where can you get internet access at this time? Head on over to the Trevithick building where you will find a 24/7 pc room off the first floor corridor.

The Trevithick 24 hr pc room recently underwent a renovation and is now transformed into a bright inviting workspace. Gone are the stained carpet tiles, gone is the decrepit old notice board, gone is the pointless wooden shelf from the end wall!

The room has been freshly painted in brilliant white with an accent wall in a warm shade of purple. A new carpet covers the floor and combined with the brand new lighting provides an ideal work environment. The room is equipped 24/7 with 21 PCs, two scanners (one A3), an A4 colour printer, two black and white printers and a photocopier.

In addition to this our 24hr bookable discussion room has also had a lick of paint and some brand new chairs, providing an excellent area for group discussion or, if you prefer, a calm study environment for up to 12 people.
